Bet: Black Expat Tales Poem by Nika McGuin

Bet: Black Expat Tales

American...
Who me?
I'm just a mixed African
born outside of my culture

Patriotic...
What's that you say?
Why would I be
to a country that discriminates
against those who look like me?

Bitter?
Well, maybe a little
but if you read a bit of history
or just turn on the news at night,
You'd see I have many reasons to be

Grateful...
Yes, and very!
There are so many places
that I could have been born in
I appreciate all of the privilages
I've been given

Miss it?
Sometimes I do
I miss that gorgeous Louisiana culture
that has shaped so much of who I am
I miss my family and all of the special occasions
that I'm unable to attend

Move back?
I don't think I would
here the living is stress-free and good
here's to expatriots leaving the hood!

2- though white, 'middle class'? , and usually contented, AND American born, i also am not 'patriotic' if that means loyal to my country in all ways, always. but, like you, I am also " grateful" ! to MyPoemList. bri :)

1- it sounds like you've 'pulled up stakes', and i think i actually heard that a 'few' years ago. " Stress-free" sounds wonderful, if it's not too..........boring. I'm 'on' my fourth wife and it is often stressful, (for both me and her) , but it is NOT boring when she's around, ....as long as i have a computer and novels.
