Battleground Poem by Tracy Craighead

Battleground

Rating: 5.0

Narrowly I trip through the wires
Carefully crawling, body low
Hugging the earth, kissing the ground
Dodging the bullets and their constant flow
Shelter is deep, but I remain shallow
At the end of the battle,
with the war still on
A brief pause in the chaos
A Stillness...nothing won
When I stand tall....I can finally see
All those I've buried below my feet
I am so proud, Although mired in deceit
There is no happiness in this relief
Just pain, confusion, and a crushing grief
And In this struggle a cynic breeds
For I no longer openly weep
Pain overcomes decency,
It washes such evil in solid white
While pushing all good
into the darkness of night
