Baby Gorilla Poem by Denis Martindale

Baby Gorilla

The baby's little heart was glad
That he shared company,
He had no reason to feel sad,
True love was there to see.
Tranquillity still sensed by all,
And peace was everywhere,
And though, to me, his world seemed small,
His world had much to share.

The sun was shining up above,
A gentle breeze was near,
Companions lavished him with love
Such that he felt no fear.
He stared with wonder on his face
As he surveyed the sky,
And moved at such a gentle pace,
While watching clouds roll by.

At times, he stared at both his hands,
Amazed at what he saw,
Without the knowledge of God's plans
Yet life held so much more.
Was he at peace with all he had?
Yes, thankful all the time,
And yet I'm puzzled he felt glad,
He didn't have a dime!

Denis Martindale. May 2022.

The poem is about me feeling puzzled by a picture.
Puzzled is the back panel title of the magnificent
wildlife painting by UK artist Stephen Gayford.
