Awake Poem by Kristy Shelton

Awake

I can't sleep
It's late, or early
And so dark outside
It's hard to close my eyes
You're all I see
Even when they're open wide
The longing for you is great
Like the need for water
Like the need for air
All the words that flow from you
Are like music to my ears
Saying you'll always be there
But I need you now
Not in weeks or months
To be able to catch my breath
Before everything else falls apart
Before I can't go on any longer
Before there's nothing of me left
I know I must have patience
Slow and steady wins the race
It's easier said than done
I'll push through though
Until the race is over
And I've finally won
The prize is you
My gold medal
I couldn't ask for more
I need your words in my ear
Forever more
