Animals I Have Seen. Poem by Michael Walker

Animals I Have Seen.

Rating: 5.0

I have seen lions and tigers in zoos,
Looking fierce. Who would be a lion tamer?
I have seen leopards streaking across the veldts
Of South Africa chasing prey until the end-game.

Men hunt deer and wild pigs in season.
They see it as a sport for some reason.
Maybe they like to fire rifles in the bush
Like soldiers in battle. I am no hunter.

In fact, I feel for the sheep and cattle
Which graze in the green paddocks
On farms. All they do is chew grass by day
And sleep out in the cold by night.

Dairy cows provide milk and cream,
While cattle are raised for beef,
Like lambs who are sadly slaughtered for meat.
I used to work on a roving gang, shearing sheep.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Glossary: Veldt= a very large plain. Afrikaans. Paddock= a field on New Zealand farms.
I have walked around zoos in Auckland and Sydney, liking what I saw.
Deer hunting is popular in my country, especially for men, but it never appealed to me.
I had holiday jobs shearing sheep as one of the roving gangs. I couldn't shear as quickly as the full-time shearers. It was always a race to shear as many sheep as possible in a day.
I had thoughts of sympathy for sheep and cattle grazing in the fields between my city and Palmerston North. Their life is no comparison to ours. At primary school we were taken to the Waitara freezing works to see the process of killing animals on the chain, to make food. I still remember that this seemed very cruel to me. Still does.

The poem reflects your love of all kinds of animals- wild as well as domestic- and dislike for keeping them as pets. The details provided by you are quite enticing. Thank you so much for this wonderful portrayal.

Yes, I do love animals in general, at a distance. I would never have pets though.

You have walked around zoos in Auckland and Sydney and observed many animals of diverse categorizes and felt them very well. Many watch lions and tigers and they cannot face them while they are in fierce mood. Dairy cows provide us staple drink, milk. Animals have great role for mankind and these should be protected and preserved. I am glad that you have read my poem, 'Elegant Embrace, ' and expressed your excellent view. Your poem is very brilliantly penned by you.10

I've seen the former in a circus show and hope they're overfed rather than tortured into knowing not to bite.
