A Vast Emptiness Poem by Teresa Reck

A Vast Emptiness

A vast emptiness surrounds me
when I look out over the sea
filling my mind full of dread
until my body feels like lead
it envelopes me like a mist
feelings of sadness try to persist

How can I stand here I do not know
watching the waves move to and fro
coldness of the water seeping my skin
killing the turmoil I feel from within
my world transformed from happy to hell
impossible to climb from so deep a well

Things between us will never be the same
your head should hang low in shame
ashes to ashes dust to dust
your cries for forgiveness seem so unjust
here I will wait until my pain does pass
you can slink away like a snake in the grass
