Would a thorn by any name
Still cause pain?
Call it inexperience
For the sake of argument
Will not the blood still drain?
What truly is in a name?
Label it intent forlorn,
Say in goodness it was born,
Will its prick now gratify?
Or might the flesh still tear?
Do you think the nerves will care
What weapon is specified?
Whether a lance or a spear
Can a name stop the tear?
No I think it is quite plain
That a thorn by any name
Will always bring its pain.
So before you act on a well-meaning plan
Ponder carefully your course,
Consider your fellow man.
Might you pierce his hand
Then hope he will understand
As you clumsily bandage the wound?
