A Territory Flower Poem by Geoffrey Fafard

A Territory Flower

Rating: 4.5

All the needle nosed honey suckers
Sit on the wire fence
Eying off the last Grevillea flower
Little native sprig of sweetness
Last remaining nectar shop

In this last area of abandonment
Small birds hide in leafy shadows
In this single oasis for miles
Rapscallions and rascals rule the rest
Crows, Hawks, Carellas, Gallahs and Parrots
Wait for whatever-cool evening handouts
Road kill and little birds to make mistakes

So as long as there is one Grevillea left
One flower then little birds will live
In cool shadows on hot days
Sucking nectar, living sweet
Waiting, waiting for new flowers
That the Rains will bring.
