A Prayer Poem by Damani Harris

A Prayer

A prayer is what I truly need
With such heightened passion that I shall proceed
Romantic thoughts in my head
There were many thoughts that I have had that has been left unsaid
Thinking that I may end up being the greatest man to ever walk
I remember I once was a short stem now I am a massive beanstalk
Knowing my own stubbornness would be the only thing to stop me
I compensated for it by hard work and close listening
A prayer is what I truly need
To humble my unsustainable lust for material security
Clueless in what I will exactly be or the impact I will have
But that very prayer shall direct me in the right path
Born and raised under an umbrella of enormous expectations
Telling myself “Take it one at a time, it will come, just have patience.”
I cried a million times in many different bathrooms
Because at the time I didn’t know what my life would subsequently lead to
Consumed with the idea of accomplishment
I pray on my hands and knees as I depart to a world of utter amazement.
