A New Road Poem by Tammie Thrasher

A New Road

It all started with a simple opportunity for a chance.
A promise to never be hurt.
A promise to never be left alone.
A promise that I held in my heart, resting in your hand.
It all started with trust.
A love that felt so real.
A love that felt unconditional.
A love that filled my heart so full of happiness.
It all started with Strength.
A prayer that held us together through it all.
A prayer every night before we rested our eyes in separate states.
A prayer to soon be only a few minutes away.
It all started with distance.
A road between that was longer than most.
A road that grew shorter with time.
A road that led us together.
It all started with forever.
A proposal of more than just a high school sweetheart.
A proposal of a lifetime.
A proposal of ‘until death do us part.'
It all started with the word Duh.
A plan began with a simple question.
A plan to fight through anything.
A plan to win every time.
A plan to last.
It all started to fade when one went to college.
Another distance.
A distance that wasn't far, but felt so extreme.
A distance not prepared for again.
It all started to drift away.
A love fell out of love.
A love meant for forever, faded.
A love that wasn't God's will.
It all started with a simple opportunity for a chance.
A promise to never be hurt.
A promise to never be left alone.
A promise of love turned into a promise of friendship.
It all started with a friend request to make a new path.
A road to be taken a different way.
A road between, but a call away.
A road I'll walk away from, but one I'll never forget I had taken.
