A Corner People Thing Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

A Corner People Thing

Rating: 4.1

On the streets in our hometowns
They stand together...
Men throw cans in carts together
Learning to live and eat whatever.
All...
In the name of love!

They play together
Grow gray together
Walk, talk and think together.
All...
In the name of love!

These are the people cornered
On the corners
Begging for change and miracles
On the streets of our hometowns.

Together they expect a 'ship' or something better
Coming while they doze from a 'high' together.
Some would call bums of these lifeless 'go-getters'
All...
In the name of love!

These are the people cornered
On the corners
Begging for change and miracles
On the streets of our hometowns.

Warriors wasting their points of views,
On streets where all claim paid their dues.
Rubbing their hands to get warm in Winter's cold!
A corner people thing showing numbers...uncounted
Untold!
On the streets of our hometowns.

Note: 'A Corner People Thing' was composed
many years ago as part of my 'MindPrints from
Untouched Places' presentation. This was back in the 80's.
And I think it is even more relevant today.
This poem also appears in the collection,
MindPrints from Untouched Places, Vol I (the book)

Compassion flows from your words. Eloqently expressed, and full of meaning. We have gone horrribly astray, that such words are needed.. Thank you for your song. It weaves a complicated thead. - Will

An excellent poem covering a rare social issue which rarely has been a theme with others. It is the reality till now in third world countries.Emotional, eductional and financial bankruptcy is the cause for these issues.Society has to introspect to find a permenent solution to these problems.A well told story in beautiful words.I rate it 10.

Somethings in life will never change, as long as there are families breaking up, marriages breaking down..people getting caught up in a world of debt..and losing their homes.....there will be homeless people trying to survive on the city streets. It's a terrible fact, that not enough is being done to stop this happening.....We all live in the hope that something will eventually get done about the alarming amount of homeless people and not just single...but sometimes whole families....its very sad. Thanks for covering this topic Lawrence, '10' best wishes Jon

I hope that some things will happen to help out homeless everywhere. Not sure what those things will be, but it is nice to keep hope for the better for them. Looks like the way the economy is going down the tubes there may even be even more homeless. Lets just hope for better things to come. Hope everyone keeps voting! Your poem is a ten. Sincerely, Connie Webb
