On Time

A second stretches to an hour
A week, a year or eons long
The pendulum swings toe and fro
Not knowing whether fast or slow
Or where the seconds spent are now
As time bends under nature’s power.

Light brings its message from deep space
And carries too the stamp of time
To tell us where its face was when
It left to travel on again
Cast by creation far away
Perhaps then at some other pace.

Time peers out from the watching eye
And feeds to history all it sees
Where futures rise up from the mist
Of memories one can’t resist
To paint a world that’s never there
Like figures seen as clouds roll by.

Of course to measure rates of change
Gives one the power to rule above
To make the heavens turn at will
To plan one’s life and dreams fulfill
But beware of the ticking clock
Whose hands can move in ways so strange.
