Valentine Okolo Poems

I will wear sunglasses,
so as to hide the tears which form in my eyes.
For a man is not supposed to cry,
so they say,

2.

My love
I will not ask you
to be a pigeon or a dove
cooing your pleasures away
...

This is not poetry. They are my words handcuffed and carried away
in black Marias by men who play gods with guns. And wearing the official uniforms given to them by those who rule, in orderto protect the people. Yet, they choose not to protect the people. Instead, they extort money from them and have them locked up on trumped up charges, written on statements of air.

This is not poetry. It is the rage of wasted years. Of youths, considered useless by a system which murders their visions. And buries them in a graveyard of lost dreams. A system which leaves the youths to wander in the wilderness of uncertainty, unsure of tomorrow. Because for many of them, tomorrow might never come.

Sunglasses

I will wear sunglasses,
so as to hide the tears which form in my eyes.
For a man is not supposed to cry,
so they say,
and because of this:
my heart I have kept in a safe.

But I will wear sunglasses all the same
for I am emotional as poets come.
As emotional as Thomas
who found solace in a bottle.
As emotional as Byron
who went to Avalon without a drink.

For my feelings I carry with me,
visible for you to see
like Magritte's apple stuck to a forehead.

Glasses which will be taken off
when I go to bed at night,
lulled to sleep by the stars,
my nightmares forgotten.

And when tomorrow comes
again, to put them on.

Valentine Okolo Quotes

'I walk alone, sharing company with the winds, at peace with the elements.'

I have walked through wars, carried the infant from the mother in a pool of red.

I am the messenger. And I will prick their conscience.

'I am yesterday's news abandoned in a heap, patiently waiting for the recyclers bin'

'For my feelings I carry with me, visible for you to see like Magritte's apple stuck to a forehead.'

It is always love at first-write.
