Susan Detlefsen Poems

She's been around the world
Umbria, Tuscany, Venice and Rome.
She's lived down under
And around and over
...

The folly and the ivy
The pulling of the ivy
In my heart and mind sits mulling
Mulling, mulling, pulling, pulling, pulling.
...

She fills the page with every known variety of woman
and of man,
with the contents of a room
an ocean shore
...

It's not about the ganchos
Not about boleos
It's not the tango shoes you wear
Or how you cabeçeo.
...

Pronominally challenged

What's your sign?
One used to ask.
...

War is stupid
No English is needed.
No words
Can convey
...

When you walk through it
Pure pink rose perfume
Will fill your head
Make you drunker than Rimbaud.
...

La pluie sur Puy
me donne une seule envie:
me rendormir et
donc rester au lit.

The Girl Who's Never Been Around The Block

She's been around the world
Umbria, Tuscany, Venice and Rome.
She's lived down under
And around and over
The hills and plains
And through the deepness of the desert.
She probably knows every tide pool and the name of every sea creature
on the Oregon coast.
She can make papillotes de crevette
The next day a country pot roast.

While her mate the probation officer
Gets the full search
She's the one who won't be frisked
while crossing the border from Tijuana
She's the girl next door and everybody's mamma
So innocent she can even grow marijuana.

She's been to Sevilla, tasted the mantequilla
Sailed with the Princess to Greece and Dublin town
She's been around the world
Knows how to fix Shepherd's Pie
And how to fix a clock.

She's been to London and Paris
Yes, she's been around the world
But she's still the one
Who's never been around the block.
