Yellow Footprints In The Sand

My son, my hero, my best friend,
I watched you as you grew.
Through laughter and tears, I held you close.
My love was bound to you like glue.

Amazement is among many words,
I felt as time went by.
To watch as childhood brought you here,
I feel PROUD, I will not lie!

That morning when I held you close,
Tears flowing down my cheek.
I said goodbye, I'll see you soon,
You left for your first week.

A week that probably proved to be,
The launch of your biggest dreams.
Soon you'd find through many new trials,
Life will feel harder than it seems.

As I waited by the phone,
Anticipating your first call.
I did not get to talk to you,
Although, I heard your message clear above all.

Soon the letters would pour in,
First one brought me tears and a smile.
You told me how your days had been,
And ‘mom, I'll see you in a while'!

Days turned to weeks, and soon a month,
Not one of them went by…
That I did not think of my little boy,
Soon to be a man, the thought made me cry.

My son, my hero, my BEST friend,
I think to myself on this very day.
SOON very soon begins the Crucible.
I know you GOT this in EVERY way!

Me, Your Father, your siblings and friends,
Can't wait till graduation time.
To see your smile to hug you close.
Is worth every word in this rhyme.

As I sit and ponder everything…
I remember a time when you held my hand,
And now here you are soon to be,
A hero who followed yellow footprints in the sand.
