You Who Are Reading Poem by Emmanuel George Cefai

You Who Are Reading

You
You who are reading
These and other lines
Of mine

Remember me

When I no longer sing
No longer versify:
Remember me.

You who are reading - that would be me in this instance - that reader is summoned to pay witness to mortality - the poet's mortality. I'm reminded of Omar Khayyam's references to his own death: WHEN YOU LOOK AMONG THE GUESTS STAR-SCATTERED ON THE LAWN, YOU WILL LOOK FOR ME IN VAIN.
