You Should Still Be Here Poem by Danny Speicher

You Should Still Be Here

You were half of a life younger than I
With dreams and drive that went on for miles
It was too soon to have to say goodbye
And to never again see your smiles

So many ways to pass to forever
It seems only three remain as the cause
For each and every tragic life severed
Three causes turn the most from is to was

Relief from despair and numbing of pain
And the accidental dangers of life
You should still be here, your own world to reign
But, now you've gone, removed from all this strife

Take me back to the days when all of you
Were still here with us, standing tried and true

I never thought knowing people so young
Would put me at funerals so often
Nor knowing how fast the song would be sung
All the times I'd cry over a coffin

'Set boundaries… Don't become too attached…'
Words of wisdom, ring even wiser now
But, how does a person simply detach
How do you, your love, simply not allow

No… In this world full of pain and despair
I will not guard my heart despite the ache
I shoulder hurt as long as I can bear
And pray the joy outweighs all the heartbreak

You should still be with us, my dear, young friends
May your short legacy, here, never end
