You Should Have Waited Poem by Judith Evans

You Should Have Waited

So tell me, did you come for her?
I'm trying to figure it out
Was ten years, ten too many apart?
Could you have waited?
You should have waited.

Did you see heartache heading her way?
You would not let that be her fate
Instead that's been left for us
But you could have waited
You should have waited

I have to believe you came for her
She would have been overwhelmed to see you
What a choice for her to make
But did she not ask for a little more time?
Did she not ask if you could wait?

She would only have gone for you
You should have let her grow old
Maybe not a telegram from a King
But older, just older
If only you could have waited

And so I will just ask the same of you
As you asked of me
Look after her, make sure she is ok
And when my time comes, promise me this
You will both be waiting
