World Opinion (08/04/98) Poem by Steve Slimm

World Opinion (08/04/98)

Hello world! I see you smile
with the toothy gaps of a six-year-old
As I cast a sidelong glance
Between the rows of supermarket produce.

You also watch me open-eyed
Through the passenger window
From the safety of your strapped-in seat.
Again you are smiling - always smiling.

Then I hear you jabbering the usual questions
And delivering your opinions on the way things are (especially nice)
And your mother listens quietly and
Answers all things with utmost respect and awe.

This is all I really know of you -
World that is purported to be headed for disaster –
World that in turmoil supposedly finds itself.

Where are you if not in those comical evaluations
and those blanket-sucking dosing afternoons?

I cannot find you other than this way -
And to tell you the truth - neither do I wish to.
