Wings Poem by Tessa Eichhorst

Wings

It's almost time for me to fly. Time to
spread my wings and soar like an
eagle. Comfortable as I am in
my nest, I need to grow up and fly
away.

Too long have I been waiting for the
day to be done with this step and
move to the next. Like a baby bird
I needed you to care for me and see
me through. Now your baby bird is all
grown up and needs to have a flight
without you.

I've earned these wings I've been working
towards. I have accomplished so many goals.
Now these wings need a test drive so I can
see how I fly on my own.

Lovely poem, Tessa. I remember feeling this way myself when I was your age. I am a parent though and it's from that perspective that this most touches me. I can only imagine that it will be hard to find myself with an empty nest one day but I'd worry considerably less if my daughter was as confident and ready as you sound. Well written piece! Best wishes to you AND the one(s) in the nest that you are leaving - Christine
