White Horses Poem by Peter Rogerson

White Horses

Across the moonlit sand they came,
Surging white across the shore,
The pounding of their sturdy hooves
Crescending in a mighty roar.

The wind whipped up their tossing manes
And foam came flying from their teeth,
As all their fire and energy
Was hammered on the sand beneath.

They wheeled around in front of me -
Leaping, dancing through the spray.
With quivering nostrils, flashing eyes
They galloped on across the bay.

I stood and watched, without a sound
The graceful flowing mass of white
Then suddenly as they had come
They cantered off into the night.
