Where Bovary Boves Supreme

You update a translation
for a generation to read
closer to their brogue.

You lose sense of time,
but gain foreign readers
till more are reading it in English
than are in its own tongue,
in which updating isn't done.

Updating, it would seem,
must inhibit
production of new works
with a similar theme.

En France, Bovarys foirent comme larrons.

In England,
Bovary boves supreme.
