Where Are Your Words For Me? Poem by Thomas Noel Smith

Where Are Your Words For Me?

Where are your words for me?
Are they hidden in your heart?
Are your lips forever sealed?
Your eyes look at my shadow
Am I a ghost
That fades before your eyes?

I speak
Don’t you hear?
The din of human voices
Washes over me
Around me, through me
Like symphonic notes played too loud
By stern musicians
Seeking their own special forte.

But I speak in the quiet tones
Of pastoral dreams
And soft white clouds and life.
Don’t you hear?

But where are your words for me?
Fallen to earth like broken notes
Fleeing from harmony
