When You Get There Poem by Nweke Emmanuel

When You Get There

You will be told
When you get there (I know)

But there and here it is
The shepherds are the wolves
The sheep easy prey to foxes and rogues 5
There: too little a city
Negativism in his highest deeds and wont
There, never given a cause to doubt a truth
Ignorance breeds on truth and turn to lies

The land there, as it was theirs 10
No footprint on the sand of time
Nature is too tick to make hers theirs

No, not even an emissary is accepted of God
There, needs a devil sent by God
All good bring them loss 15
And leaves them happier than before
There, what we see are humans
No, not humans for their deeds are wont
Even nature bring them woe
For nature makes her way 20

Not even good creatures fight their cause

There, cheerleaders stir their cause
Witches take their nest
Light, a negative force
Darkness creates their rest 25

There, as clear as truth
Mortals to live are mute
Spirits live in extinct, for their deeds are wont

An enemy, if God sends you there. A devil you must be
For your deeds are wont 30

There, not a parent lives
Parents are shepherds when their deeds are don'ts
There, crimes are good, Criminals doomed

There. I once lived, with my devil
And one truth which is yet untold 35
In midst of their deeds and evil
Those who are no younger old
Think they are equal to all but none

When you get there you will see
There, the beautiful ones born ugly. 40
