What's Eating You?

In German,
'What's eating you? '
is not
'Was isst du? '

'What are you eating? '
is
'Was isst du? '

'Was hast du denn? '
'What have you then? '
is
'What's eating you? '

I now see the distinction, in translation, of 'what are you eating? ' and what's eating you? ' My mistake was not to notice the negative in the second line.
