We Have A Fountain Poem by Glen Kappy

We Have A Fountain

We have a fountain
which I forget
while reading
scripture, poems
in the pre-dawn hour.

But then
I set aside the books
and cradle coffee
close my eyes…
We have a fountain—
gurgle, splash…

The quiet and sublime source of our joy we find in ourselves in a cool predawn hour when there is minimum distraction of daily hotchpotch..A nice poem thanks for sharing.

We have a fountain - that sets the fountain of our heart to spring out gurgling, splashing and sprinkling all around us with love for the humanity and GOD our eternal saviour. This fountain embedded deep within us can be recognised and activated through deep meditation and contemplation. Only through silence can we hear the spring of a fountain. Most beautifully done Glen!

What is it about the sound of water, the movement, the liveliness. As you approach a waterfall and the magnificence overwhelms. Yet the gurgling fountain playful in sound much more beautiful than the softest tickling of the ivories in a composition. With closed eyes, a book at rest in lap and all care released like so many balloons. If one is not transported by your words than I fear the reader has cheated himself along the way.

Hey, Edmund! I agree with your closing sentence, at least when applied to adults. At this point in my life I definitely need time to center and be quiet- to recalibrate. Good to see your name and comments. Thanks! -Glen

The fountain is a real spout of water but it immediately suggests the metaphorical fountain of the human mind - a source of refreshment, of fresh ideas, of a clarity of mind and purity of spirit. It is actually symbolic of the state of mind you want to achieve when you read poetry, Bible (1st stanza) or let your mind floe freely in a proto-meditative state (2nd stanza) . Yoir poem conveys the quiet joy if such morning reflections. (It's 8: 12 am - we are almost at the end of this window of possibility! It's Fountain time

hey, daniel! i like your comment, and thanks for writing it. yes, it's about the call to quiet, the luxury(?) of quiet, to center, to let go. and the sound of water... i've read hesse's siddhartha (my favorite hesse book) three times (i think) and a favorite scene from it is him by the river transported. glen

A beauty! ! Great to sit by a gurgling fountain and enjoy reading and coffee. Wish I should have that luck. Simple and beautiful.
