We Follow In Step Poem by Robert William Schmitz

We Follow In Step

You’re left, your left
Your left right left
Roll the cadence in
When I was only ten
I got my first pair
But these weren’t full of air
No swoosh, no four stripes
Just black leather
Shined with spit and wipes
A childhood passion
A rawhide fashion
A lifelong journey from the start
But where am I to start?
I need this uniform to connect
From my head to my heart
So I look to my uncle Jim
Strive to be like him
Look to my other Bill
Those will be hard boots to fill
Then standing there is those Navy blues
I wanna wear those shoes
Wanna be just like you
So here I am grays and tans
Living a dream filled with no fans
Where some see a hero
Others see a fear in me though
Others see money
New rims
Pretty honeys
And new cars
In truth it comes down
To these stars
Red white n blues
These boots and you

Thanks Dad.
