Way Better Than Superman Poem by Corrine Shoemaker

Way Better Than Superman

Rating: 5.0

I try to mock everything you do,
Hustling around, putting on your shoes.
I just can’t seem to replace you.
Mommy wakes up screaming through the night,
I rush out my bed and run to her side.
Just another dream about an explosion attack,
Nothing to worry about; go back to bed.
Now its morning, time to go to school,
Before I run out the door I kiss the picture of you.
I’m only little I don’t understand,
But when I’m a man I’ll know you did great honor for our land.
My outfit represents red, white, and blue,
I let everyone know I do it for you.
My dad is a Marine, big and strong,
This man in my life could never do wrong.
Not saying I don’t break down and cry,
All of the day I want you by my side.
But I stay strong for mommy because she misses you a lot,
I always hear her talking to God.
She asks for you to stay safe and sound,
To come home in one piece so we can wrestle around.
She squeezes me tight and says I represent you,
I wear that comment high and proud to know I am a little version of you.
You’re better than any superhero known demand,
My dad is way better than the big ol’ superman.
Time to go hear mommy sing me asleep,
She starts to cry as she looks at her wedding ring.
I squeeze her tight and let know everything is alright.
We pray to make you come home by daylight,
So we can all sleep tight,
Knowing our whole family is alright.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I have an uncle that is a proud Marine with a family of four. He has two boys and daughter. His oldest son is 7 and looks up to him like you couldn't believe. I knew if i wrote a poem logically towards them they would cherish it as much as I do.

I could tell that this was heartfelt. It's great that words give you an outlet. Keep writing (and read, too- it will open up the world for you) .
