Waves Poem by Samantha Campbell

Waves

Why do you
only come
in waves

Temporary
waves
crashing
euphoric
waves

Cresting
and folding
onto the sea
of my subconscious

Washing away
all pain
pushed
to the safety
of a peaceful
harbor

Baptized
in a loving
embrace
that is all
too soon
replaced
by cruel
reality
above
the sea
spray

You only
come in
waves

High tide
and
fast rising
losing
my footing
on what
is below
sinking
quickly
hit me
with
another
lift
me up
on
the surf
ride
it to
the
blissful
shores
of
eternity
away
from
the squall
of
misery
away
from
the
ephemeral
toil
of
life
here

You always
come in
waves
a momentary
escape

The waves
of euphoria
are retreating

Elusive happiness
return to me
if only in waves
forever in waves

For another time
I feel I've
reached
nirvana

A moment
of Zen
in a heaven
of my making

Just
to have it
slip away

It
always
goes
away

Why do I
seek with such
abandonment
the fading pleasures
of a corrupt existence

The waves
of euphoria
have
retreated
again

The high
evaporates
in their
absence

My sea
calms
to its usual
despair

You
only come
in waves
always
in waves
