Vultus Ad Mortem Poem by Caleb Kanayo

Vultus Ad Mortem

I looked for death
In the corner of my room
But found stuffy strings
Cobwebs similar to loom

I looked for death
In the vastness of the night
Found nothing but darkness
Death still hiding in plain sight

I looked for death
In the tie of a knot
Tied and tied found nothing
Confusion it brought

I looked for death
In the bottom of a bottle
A big black bitter bottle
Found nothing but a taste that made me gurgle

I looked for death
In the closet of little kids
Found depression and mischief
What a sweet song they sing

I looked for death in the burdens of adulthood's load
Seeking death's solace
But found only the weight of the world's woes
A tapestry of worries that never cease.

I looked for death
In the green of the ground
The black of the earth spoke
I didn't hear a sound

I looked for death
Under the stone-cold graves
Found nothing,
Silence and sadness they wave

I looked for death
Every day in everything everywhere
But I found death in life
Death living in the air.
