Visiting My Roots Poem by H.M. Gautsch

Visiting My Roots

Hip-hop and the city life are some of my favorite sounds,
But I still have those days
Where I want to just cruise the back roads and drown it out.
I'm going to crank up the country music.
From Alan Jackson to good ole' George Strait,
Brooks & Dunn to Travis Tritt, just to name a few.

It's one of those days to visit my roots,
sitting on the front porch with corn stalks in my front view.
From the Mississippi River
To Mama's grilled chicken and gizzards.
Today I'm visiting my roots.

I was born in Black River,
raised in the backwoods in Wisconsin.
Grew up on shows like Walker: Texas Ranger and Dr. Quinn.
I'm going to crank up some good ole' country music.
From Johnny Cash to Blackhawk,
Alabama to Tim McGraw, just to name a few.

It's one of those days to visit my roots,
walking across fresh cut grass barefoot.
Embracing the summer breeze
And the small hick towns in the hills and valleys.
Today I'm visiting my roots.
