Veteran Poem by Randy Briggs

Veteran

2nd poem for
one occassion,
man who is
drunk, insane and
oblivious to what
is going on
pees
on the bus.
everyone complains
again, cop knows
his
lack of sanity,
everyone walks
off the bus
to watch this
crazy get
arrested and
are dissapointed
when he doesn't.
everyone except me
and the old man,
whose hat is line
with gold metals from
war and whose mouth
carries a single tooth.
How pathetic and
sad these people
make a joke out
of one man. everyone
except for me or the
veteran.

'pathetic really'

'i know, to make a
mockery of
a human being'

'he is oblivious to what is
taking place'

'some people just
need to know that
somehow they are
better than someone'

that vet had a heart
as deep as I could have
known for we both
witnessed the tragedy
of the human spirit ripped out and
gutted by others. I hope He didn't gain
his love and understanding of humanity
by killing in war.
that would be the harshest of all
lessons,
and to have to live with it?
at least I know there is some
good in this world.
