Veranda Dreaming Poem by Lizzie Lum

Veranda Dreaming

Fragrant coffee christens the new day
Morning sun makes haste, bleaching stone as it goes
Shadows slope geometric on walls stretching into squares
Blushing blooms tilt their heads and straighten stems in pots
Linens blow mutely over lazy chairs and the chaise longue
The forest breathes much welcome relief into the warmth
And tickles the fancy of tinkling chimes that dangle by the door
Whilst dancing with gypsy leafs on terracotta tiles
Slippered feet muffle the jangles of porcelain cups in the kitchen
Then those lazy shuffles yield to the sigh of wicker creaks outside
As bed head bodies slouch again to soak up the tumbling green
Sleepy heads imagining the distant village charmed by its own rhythm
Busy with Bonjours, baked breads and twin-kissed pleasantries
But we gather here on the veranda under bamboo
Free to dream our own perfect day in Bagnols

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem was written about a relative's house in the South of France, situated just outside a small village called Bagnols-en-Forêt. This is one of my favourite places to visit.
