Up Too Early Poem by Shalom Freedman

Up Too Early

UP TOO EARLY
Up too early
In the middle of the night
Pretending it is the beginning of the day
But secretly
Alone and afraid in the deep darkness
And hoping somehow
Tiredness will overcome
And sleep begin again-

Up too early
And struggling to begin the day
A prayer made
And news read
And hiding the fear
In small lines that want to say
Light will be here sooner
Than the clock now shows.
