The cool evening breeze
has me out on the porch - again.
The sky shows signs
of a deep shade of royal blue.
I spot a few lightening bugs
near the bushes below me.
A few blocks away
someone is testing fireworks.
They explode, but don’t do much.
An occasional plane lights up the sky.
The cars are constant - as usual.
Two teenage girls
stop arguing long enough
to ask the time.
A boy on a bicycle
whistles at the brunette’s short shorts.
A woman walks on the other side,
it appears that she has a box balanced on her head.
Someone in a car
yells something inaudible at her.
She ignores him and continues her walk.
I hear a cat meow in the driveway,
and as I go to check it out,
I hear my phone ring.
It’s an almost last minute invitation
to dinner - tomorrow.
I accept and we chat for some time.
When I return to the porch,
the cat is gone from the driveway,
the woman with the box on her head is nowhere to be seen,
the royal blue sky is black,
only an occasional car passes,
and a cooler evening breeze tells me
it’s time to get some sleep.
