Under A Dead-Rat Tree Poem by Gerald Brilliant Mtetwa

Under A Dead-Rat Tree

We sat under a baobab tree locked in a saccharine embrace
Our hearts throbbing with bursts of love
Our passion -inflamed voices floating in the wafting breeze
Our foes casting envious glances at us

From a nearby village an African drum thundered
As if announcing our love to the whole world
And approving such a special bond
While wild birds ululated in cheerful adoration

Our bodies spoke a language beyond words
You are my King
Thank you so much for this love ring
Am all yours
Mine love for you pours
I trust you with all my heart
Am deeply in love with you
I am your African Queen
And you are my King
I love you
