Two Men And An Ambulance Poem by Marlin Nightingale

Two Men And An Ambulance

In silence rolls the ambulance,
Down narrow streets, neath giant oaks,
Shadows 'cross the windshield dance
Setting a soft ambience,
Inside the truck; two men in cloaks.

An EMT and paramed',
Casting glances at each house,
Squinting in the light they sped,
Hoping to revive the dead,
Someones loved one, friend, or spouse.

At last they find the right address,
And grimly nod as if to say,
I hope it's 'heart-attack from stress',
And not some other bloody mess,
Like that shooting the other day.

They wheel aside the dusty curb,
And throw the shifter into park,
This quiet neighborhoods' disturbed
At such a raucous change; and word
Soon spreads; like fire from spark.

An air of calmness soon pervades,
When from the truck the men descend,
Professionalism is displayed.
Who knows how many lives they've saved;
How many hearts have pumped again! !

A sense of practised ease is found,
When at the bed they stand and work,
And from the body they're gathered round,
No breath, no word, nay not a sound!
They wipe their sweat upon their shirts.

And then at last a single beat,
Felt there upon the patient's wrist,
Their eyes alight; again they cheat
Death's horrible grip that wants to creep,
Into their lives like clammy mist!

So ends the tale of Two, so fine,
Who spend their days near pain and fear.
Thats how they often spend their time;
Saving lives. They are the kind,
Of men you need when death is near!
