Two Fraternities Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Two Fraternities

Long established.
Like the eating,
Of corn fed beef.
Potatoes and cabbage.
Grandma's apple pie.
And pledging alligence to the flag.
Traditions to have had,
These days more questioned.
By many who have begun to see.
Clouds being removed to view clarity.
Between the ones once reluctant.
Yet used to deceive, trick and fool.
Done to do by two fraternities,
On a prestigious campus.
Where they are 'schooled'.

One representing,
The liberal strength of accepting donkeys.
Known for their ability,
To carry the weight of those in despair.
And the other,
Rumored to be conservative and intelligent.
Wise elephants known,
For their unrelenting wisdom.
Choosing to adorn,
Symbolized 'images' of their mascots worn.

Yet...
Both fighting amongst themselves.
About who should control,
Over the mowing of the campus lawn.
To convince the image and upkeep of it,
Would be better if the appearance...
Is done to do,
With less diversity to identify.
Although reality contradicts,
What is wished to be depicted.
On a campus restricted,
To pretensions and delusions.
Allowing to welcome embarrassment done.

"Uh...
Those young women.
Who seem to be pledging,
For acceptance in sororities on campus.
What are they doing?
Carrying ladders.
And dressed as if construction workers."

-They have been secretly chipping away,
The glass ceilings of all buildings.
On this prestigious 'elitist' campus.
And...
With attempts to do this,
Noticeably ignored to be noticed.-

"I don't understand."

-That's how effective their strategy is.
No one suspects,
What they are doing.
Not yet.
But will.
And if you notice...
Not an image to symbolize,
Which side they are on.
That's how they can do what they do.
Done without deciding,
Being petty about it...
Benefits what is needed to be,
Accomplished.-

"Why you looking at me? "
