Tree Ear

Haliotis is the name of any gastropod
with a perforated ear-shaped shell
lined with mother-of pearl.
The abalone is one I know well.

Without knowing its actual name,
dendriotis is what I'm calling
the ear-shaped fungus on my bounteous peach.

Haliotis comes from Greek otis meaning ear
and hals meaning sea.
Dendron means tree.
