Tree 19 -The Benevolent Tree And The Goats Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Tree 19 -The Benevolent Tree And The Goats

Rating: 5.0

A benevolent tree
That stands bravely
Against the glaring sun;
Absorbing the heat,
Without a murmur,
Without a grumble,
Nor a complaint,
About the changing seasons.

The innocent goats sit relaxed,
Under the shade of this tree.
The goats love this shady tree,
Full of green leaves and branches.
When the wind passes by
The leaves ruffle and dance,
The goats shake their heads
Enjoying the rhythmic dance of the leaves.

They sit so calmly,
Without a disturbing thought,
Or a care in this world.
They simply stare
At the long road ahead
Far, far, beyond,
Will they walk along the long stretch?
I wonder! I wonder!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I saw this beautiful picture posted by my Facebook friend Shinoj Narayan.
I was so attracted to this picture of so many goats sitting under this tree.
I could not resist writing a poem. The goats look so innocent while the tree is a symbol of benevolence.

(1) A benevolent tree.... Absorbing the heat Without a grumble.... Nor a complain The innocent goats sit relaxed, Under the shade of this tree.... //.... This poem presents a fascinating landscape with human touch. The tree represents a benevolent soul which protects a flock of goats from scorching heat while sitting under its shade.

(2) It shows a kind of parental care on the part of tree and absorbs the heat without any grudge. The same spirit must also prevail in human society where the powerful must provide protection to the lesser mortals. Thanks, Geeta ji, for this fine piece of poetry.

Animals have a sixth sense Which man lost on his way. They brace themselves to face The changing seasons Without a word of complaint Of the scorching heat or bitter cold Or the pangs of hunger.

I like this scene you paint with your words, Geeta. Perhaps because the feel of our hot sun here is very much a present reality that I relate to the goats. With them I’ll wait to the sun lowers and it’s a bit cooler and we all can move apart from the sun’s hot glare. -Glen

i liked the poem & the photo. The goats shall not walk the stretch. With their herders, a truck they'll catch. They'll no longer enjoy the shade of a tree, as, in a week or two, on your plates they'll be. bri :)

Without a disturbing thought, Or a care in this world... These lines made me thinking. Though it is the mind that has taken man to reach the apex of evolution, it is the mind that comes in his way in, say, meditation and living a care-free life. A lovely poem that centres around the picture.

I was thinking that Dr. Geeta madam might have seen goats under a tree or in a picture of the same and it is to my surprise that it is true from Poet's note. Tree is benevolent and goats are innocent. An touching expression on tree is found from the beginning of the poem. Very beautiful poem is framed from the Facebook picture of your friend Shinoj Narayan. Thank you much.
