Too Soon Poem by Abekah Emmanuel

Too Soon

Rating: 5.0

I knew him, Yes I knew him!
A very handsome man he was
Full of strength and command
Of his life, family and of his dreams.

He was responsible, cared
And nurtured his family
With joy and godliness
That is required of every true dad.

The last time I saw him
He was in his best of mood
And worn his best suite
He looked and sounded alive
And I could read his mind
Oh it was full of smiles!

But that was many years ago
And I too, have become tough all alone
But time secretly fades too soon
And washes our tears and laughter away.

So just a twin of days ago
I was running my usual errand
When, as chance would have it,
I happened to see him once again
Oh! I couldn't believe my eyes
His beauty and joy were no more
His strength had betrayed him
And his dreams had all vanished.

But that is the man! I wondered
I knew him and he was the one
His family had been divided
And he knew them no more.

As each day dies for another to rise
He waits for nothing but that
Layering of days that covers nicely
Both the poor and the rich
Into the same unavoidable destiny.

His dreams and laughter have all vanished
And so is his hope.He wish to see and meet
his sweat-built family, but maybe
Not on this earth anymore,
because the earth has betrayed him
And too soon, time, with joy and secrecy, fades
And make all our bloody struggles become vain.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this poem after I was soaked in tears for an an hour and more. A man whom I knew very well some years ago, has just been reduced to a mere child because of sickness. It is very sad, how life can end in such a piteous manner.

A very moving tale! Time snatches away our beauty and health.... It cannot be prevented. But in addition, the poor man lost his family as it got disintegrated.... This must have been a greater blow on him! Some how it is saddening to see a man being reduced to a helpless state from his heydays!

A very sad tale Abekah. This is a tribute to a man you once knew. A man you describe as having led a decent and virtuous life. Life can be so cruel, a lingering and painful demise even more cruel. Very often it's the loved ones that suffer more, watching and waiting for the inevitable. Dementia being an example. The circumstances of death, for so many, are poor reward for having lived their lives by the book. To be reduced to a mere child, as in dementia, is not only cruel it is degrading a once noble man. Your heart is in the right place Abekah.
