Today's World Poem by Vuyani Brown Mnisi

Today's World

Rating: 2.6

Today’s world
Like a narcotic substance
Fills the well of an empty soul
Artificial light and superficial happiness
Leaves a people with hearts full of holes
A grass patch that grows without soil
And possesses like a serpent in a coil
Fills a wedge the equivalent of a rose in a desert

Today’s world
Fidgets with a people’s mind in a matter of seconds
Morals suppressed and values oppressed
Like nature’s wheels out of a wagon
Reeves taking roles of bandits
Rebels taking loads of ravish
No punishment for wrong
And notable detest at the right
A people making wrong without consent

Today’s world
Takes away your smile after consumption
Makes you cry out of compulsion
Feels like nothing when you have it
Feels like everything when you don’t

Today’s world
Like the buildings our minds make
We become rigid in our bid to disrupt order
Trapped within the ambits of their four walls
Our speeches and actions become like that of steel doors
Breaking whoever goes against it
Observing whoever submits to it.

Today’s world
Has only God to wait for
Lies have become truth
And truth the death sentence of an honest man
No love for which to go home to
Work follows us into our dreams
And the promise to love and care for one another
Stays at the birthplace or the wedding alter when we made our vows
Or adored our children on their first day
