Thomas Hardy Regrets

For all his lines,
for lack of a line,
which he called a 'plea',
he left many a 'radiant stranger' unwooed;
left one here, left one there,
plea-short, Thomas Hardy did not dare.

Many times, with Emma beside him in bed,
he wished he had dared,
wished he had pleaded or pled.
