This Morning Poem by Paul Clement Czaja

This Morning

This morning
The enthusiastic robins
Woke me up again
Way before
This part of the Blue Planet
Met the Day Star.
In other words,
It was still quite dark out
And not at all proper
For birds to be chirping so frantically –
Even if they are red breasted ones
And so eager to make friends
With their feminine counterparts
Asleep in the nests.
Such joyous racket
Could wake the dead from deep sleep,
So I rolled out of bed,
Got showered, dressed,
Into the day much earlier than I normally do.
I did not know then that
There were surprises being planned
Especially for me
By God, our caring Father,
Up ahead on the drive to Winona.
First, I came upon
A doe running with her tiny, twin fawns
Across the grassy meadow,
Then quickly across the road some twenty yards before me,
Safely into the east field happily awaiting them.
One fawn lagged a bit behind
And reminded me of me
For I, too, was the slower twin
Trying to keep up with Peter,
My older by only six minutes brother.
Soon I was up the great hill
And on the huge, flat plateau
With great farmlands
Stretching from faraway east
To the even more distant western horizon.
All was at peace
Awaiting the coming dawn already painting the clouds there
Stretched on my right side
A heartening, ruddy red.
My angel suggested I look to the west
Where in surprise was being drawn
A great half arc of a rainbow
In front of a high wall of dark, stormy clouds.
Holey Smoley! There it was –
A morning rainbow to bless my beginning day,
And the sun had not as yet
Even come over the planet Earth’s edge.
What a good sight!
It filled my heart/mind/soul with hope and happiness.
Such superabundant beauty does that to me
Whenever and wherever I am blessed to experience it.
Celebrating found beauty is why I was created a person.
It is my God given vocation.
It is why I cannot help but be a poet
Writing boldly and happily:
Do you see what I see?
