The Waters Of Time Poem by Thomas Noel Smith

The Waters Of Time

I tried to hold one day
And keep it in my heart
I tried to grasp one fleeting hour
And save it in my mind

Where did those moments go?
The flying minutes soon become
A lifetime’s memories
The face that once was young
Looks at his reflection
And sees the eyes of age
That weren’t there yesterday

Time flows away from life
Easing into the ebb and flow
Of centuries long gone by
The life-waters of forgotten men
Who once lived
Drifted beyond memory
Into oblivion’s black sea

And the waters of time still flow
As the fearful mists of tomorrow
And the mists of all our days
Become our tomorrow’s oblivion
