The Usual Question During A Reunion Poem by RIC BASTASA

The Usual Question During A Reunion

twenty five years
yes, the long twenty five years
and then we meet again
and then we look at each other
from head to feet and wonder
deep inside us, how come? how did
this happen? how did he change?
how did she become so old now
wasn't she the most beautiful
classmate in class 25 long years ago?

and this Rey, was he not this and that
and how come did he become this and not that?
and then the drinks come
after the eating and then the talk comes
and dancing and then the intoxication comes
and then the going home
the usual goodbyes and take cares,
and then you are back to your home
the present reality
without all the expectations the what ifs
and the whys and the why nots
and whatsoever,

and you sleep without remembering dreams
and you wake up the following morning
without someone beside you
without anybody to wake you up and tell you
that breakfast is ready or whatever

and this the reality of your life,
and who cares, what for, and for what reason/

life flows like a river,
life must go on like a show
and life is here, grab it,
live it, and ask for more and
ask no more.

I don't go to the reunions anymore... all those old people I don't recognize...
