The Truth About Poetry Poem by Sandra Feldman

The Truth About Poetry

Rating: 5.0

It comes or it doesn't,
It's there or it isn't,
Poetry is,
More often than not,
The best,
That our heart has got.

Your opening two lines are so true, and those of us writing and posting at PH become acutely aware of the need to be patient and not force a poem. I'm presently stalled on a poem I've been writing for the past week and a half without a breakthrough - yet! ... I really like that closing image of poetry being the best our heart has got. It shows how universal poetry is, and how essential, too. Have I mentioned this before? Your poem is an ARS POETICA, a poem that makes a statement about poetry. Horace coined the term over 2000 years ago in his example of a poem about poetry, and now you and others including me are adding to the tradition.

So very true Sandra. Poetry when written can never be forced and be true beautiful art. I believe all poets have tried and done this and it's a very unsatisfied feeling at the end for it leaves something not quite right on the paper. Great truth and write Sandra.
