The Texican Poem by Juan Olivarez

The Texican

I wasn't born in Texas,
Through no fault of my own.
But now I'm very proud,
To call Texas my home.

I've been a Texican for fifty years,
So long I can't recall.
A time when I wasn't here,
Or somewhere else at all.

But things are bigger here,
Thats why I'll never go.
Like our ten foot tall white tailed deer,
And our five horned buffalo.

People say we stretch the truth,
But that's a doggone lie.
From people who are just uncouth,
I've always wondered why.
