The Stranger Amongst Us Poem by Francis Duggan

The Stranger Amongst Us

Rating: 4.0

Since he like you and i out of a woman was born
He does not need our pity or he does not need our scorn
A stranger amongst us not one of our own
Our one fear of him is our fear of the unknown.

He has got two nice children and he has got a nice wife
And they lead an ordinary sort of a life
But he doesn't go to the pub or he doesn't talk of football
And he doesn't speak our language well at all.

He comes from a different culture to ours
And his spare time he spends in his garden tending his veggies and flowers
But like us he dresses for work on leaving his bed
And when he cuts his finger his blood it is red.

He does seem a nice enough person to me
And he does love his wife and his young family
Any strangeness of sorts in him i cannot see
We should make him feel welcome in our community.

The stranger amongst us we do not wish to know
We won't make him our friend though he is not our foe
Though to us he may seem different respect to him show
For he after all too deserves a fair go.
