The Stair
To climb down these stony steps
And understand that this water
Was here before
And this water falling,
To understand that this lichen
Has been likened many times before
To the rot growing,
Is to understand that we know
Nothing, not even our own building,
Is to understand
That rankness, its presence in our den.
